Un ironista es entonces para Rorty, aquella persona que cree que todas sus expectativas son contingentes, es decir, que pueden suceder o no suceder, por lo tanto es alguien que no se toma tan en serio sus creencias, porque es conciente de la contingencia de su propio mundo. Por otra parte Rorty establece que un liberal es aquella persona que se encuentra fuertemente convencida de que lo peor que se le puede hacer a otro ser humano es la crueldad, sin embargo, la respuesta a no ser cruel se responde por otros lenguajes que no son el de Rorty. Todos los seres humanos llevan consigo un conjunto de palabras que emplean para justificar sus acciones, sus creencias y sus vidas. Son las palabras con las cuales narramos, a veces prospectivamente y a veces retrospectivamente, la historia de nuestra vida. Cuando argumentamos, partimos de suposiciones muy fuertes, es decir, nos referimos a todo lo que damos por sentado, que damos por hecho, sin darnos cuenta, sin ser concientes de ello. En este sentido, no consideramos que todos cargamos gran cantidad de prejuicios cosas en la que creemos sin haberlas juzgado o reflexionado.
